Maria Madeira

Maria Madeira is one of the most prominent contemporary artists in Timor-Leste. She first met David in 2008 during a teaching residency at the Arte Moris Free Art School in Dili. They became good friends and ended up working together for several years researching indigenous arts, crafts and cultural practices in Timor-Leste. Throughout their friendship, and to support Maria's artistic career, David designed her website and several of her exhibition catalogues.

Fatin Ida iha Loro-Matan (A Place in the Sun) was presented at Fundaçåo Oriente in Dili in March 2022. Ina Lou (Dear Mother) was presented at the Jakarta Arts Centre in September 2014. Maria was the first Timorese artist invited to present her work in Jakarta since Timor-Leste gained its independence from Indonesia in 2002. Koalia Neneik Deit (​Quietly Speaking) was presented at Casa Europa in Dili in October 2010.
