Sanan Rai means 'clay pot' in Tetun language. Authored by renown French archeologist Jean-Christophe Galipaud, this book was designed in a trilingual format presenting examples of communities in Timor-Leste where traditional pottery-making still occurs. In Timor-Leste, pottery was introduced at least 3500 years ago and some villages across the country still reflect this very ancient tradition. This publication was produced to raise awareness on pottery-making practices in Timor-Leste and to promote the potters’ communities, in order to ensure a successful transition of this important heritage into a modern and more sustainable economy.

A short film about the last active potters in the country was produced to accompany the publication and the exhibition presented at Secretary of State for Arts & Culture.
